The Peak of Good Living

Apex takes its name from a literal high point. In the 19th century the town sat at the highest elevation on the old Chatham Railroad line between Richmond and Jacksonville. The depot that marked that apex still stands as a landmark, and the name stuck.

For much of its history Apex remained a small railroad and agricultural town. Downtown was rebuilt more than once after fires, and the historic district that exists today reflects both the resilience and the careful preservation that followed. In 1994 the downtown area was formally designated a historic district. The town motto — "The Peak of Good Living" — is more than marketing; it has become a genuine civic identity.

In recent decades Apex has grown rapidly as families sought strong schools and a community with character. Unlike many fast-growing suburbs, Apex has invested in protecting its downtown, expanding parks and greenways, and maintaining a sense of place.
