Welcome to Fuquay-Varina

Fuquay-Varina is the result of the 1963 merger of two historic towns — Fuquay Springs (known for its mineral springs) and Varina. That dual history still shapes the community, with two distinct downtown areas, a strong sense of place, and a growing reputation for arts, local businesses, and community events.

The town has grown rapidly while retaining small-town character. New master-planned communities have added modern homes and amenities, while historic districts offer character homes within walking distance of shops and restaurants. It is a popular choice for buyers who want Wake County schools and more square footage than they can find in Cary or Apex at similar price points.

A Brief History

Fuquay Springs grew up around a mineral spring discovered in 1858 by brothers Davey Crockett and Stephen Fuquay while plowing their father's farm and became a resort and tobacco-market town. Neighboring Varina took its name from the post office and grew around the railroad depot — the 1903-era Varina depot now houses Aviator TapHouse. The two towns merged in 1963 to form Fuquay-Varina. The town has boomed since: 17,937 people in 2010, 34,152 in 2020 and about 48,500 by 2025. (Census).

Why Locals Love It

Residents highlight the two downtowns, Aviator Brewing and the local food scene, parks and recreation facilities, relative affordability, and a genuine community feel. The mineral springs heritage and ongoing downtown investment add character that many newer suburbs lack.

Local Perspective

Fuquay-Varina gives you two walkable downtowns, solid schools, and more house than closer-in markets. It's still growing, but the historic core keeps it from feeling like just another subdivision town.
