Welcome to Wendell

Wendell has long been a small eastern Wake County town with a walkable historic downtown. In recent years it has become one of the Triangle's fastest-growing communities, driven largely by the massive Wendell Falls master-planned development and other new residential projects.

The combination of a genuine small-town downtown, new amenities (pools, trails, retail in Wendell Falls), and relatively attainable home prices has made it popular with families and first-time buyers priced out of Cary, Apex, and closer-in Raleigh.

A Brief History

Wendell grew up along the Raleigh & Pamlico Sound Railroad at the turn of the 20th century and incorporated in 1903. It is named for poet Oliver Wendell Holmes (Town history). For decades it was a bright-leaf tobacco market town. Its Main Street still has the brick storefronts from that era. The Wendell Falls master-planned community, started in the 2010s, kicked off a growth wave: about 9,800 residents in 2020 grew to roughly 19,700 by 2025 (Census).

Why Locals Love It

Residents appreciate the historic downtown, community events, the amenities at Wendell Falls, and the ability to get more house and yard than in western Wake while still having a reasonable commute to Raleigh. The town has worked to preserve its character as it grows.

Local Perspective

Wendell still feels like a real small town in the historic core, while Wendell Falls offers the resort-style amenities many relocating families want. The value proposition is hard to ignore compared to the west side.
