Welcome to Carrboro
Carrboro is compact and walkable. Weaver Street Market's lawn, Cat's Cradle and a long-running farmers' market anchor a downtown built around independent shops and restaurants. Most residential streets are a short walk or bike ride from Main Street.
A Brief History
Carrboro grew up around a University railroad spur and was first settled in 1882 as West End. It was incorporated in 1911 as Venable, after UNC president Francis Preston Venable. In 1913 it was renamed for textile-mill owner Julian Shakespeare Carr, after he expanded the mill and agreed to supply the town's electricity. The old mill now houses Carr Mill Mall.
